Trying to tick the right boxes

By Gabbi Floirendo

Dear fellow earth-loving friends,

They often say that ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.’ That is RARELY ever the case. More often than not, one man’s trash is everyone’s burden. And we here at Seed can’t stand the thought of adding more to the load. Being environmentally considerate isn’t cheap nor easy, but it’s far less costly in the long run.

So we searched far and wide for the most environmentally-friendly option for our main-course boxes. We didn’t take the easy route and we are proud of it. So, at the end of the day (or meal), you can happily toss our all-natural sugarcane packaging into the bin, knowing that after 90 days, it would have fully decomposed, releasing organic natural ingredients back into the earth. Like we said before, guilt should never follow a delicious meal.

I know what you are thinking… We also have plastic in our packaging. Unfortunately, for safety standards, we couldn’t risk doing without it for steaming hot soup. Plastic was the safest way to avoid the lid from softening and coming loose from the bowl. This was a hard decision, but safety first.

What about the plastic for the sides and the juices?
Good question. We use Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET), which is 100% recyclable. In fact, PET is the best and most easily recycled plastic in the world! We know, recycling isn’t always easy, which is why we are offering to do it for you! All you need to do is to give it a rinse and let it dry by your desk so that when you order from us again (probably tomorrow), you can hand it to one of our runners. While we are still trying to find a supplier here for fully biodegradable plastic, we are hoping our recollection system can work in the meantime to lessen our waste.

Finally, it’s not only about the boxes but also what’s in it. In the future, our goal is to make our food 100% organic and sustainably grown. While we still have some way to go to achieve this goal, our weekly changing menu will focus on the freshest ingredients that we can get from small independent suppliers.

It’s definitely far from being perfect but it’s a promising start. One day, we will shock you with our 100% biodegradable packaging and amaze you with completely organic meals sourced from our very own organic farm. One day….
I mean, how hard can it be? (famous last words)
